Are you the leader you want to be?
June 1, 2014
The question of leadership is a subject that is widely written and talked about. We are filled with many insightful theories, ideas and processes about how to become a great leader.
However, the question I want to ask you is what kind of leader do you want to be? Have you really thought about it as you lead your team or set up your business or look for the opportunity to climb up that career ladder? Or has the day-to-day cycle of work, deadlines and activities got you caught you in the wheel of doing the job but not actually being the leader?
What kind of a leader would you be if you had an open canvas to paint on? Go for it. Just stop here, right now, take a few seconds and get a sense of it. Jot it down ... there is no right or wrong answer so just explore what comes up for you without any analysis or judgement.
We are so used to limiting ourselves, censoring how we think and what we are capable of .... so I am encouraging you to take this opportunity and be open, curious, playful, and like a little child exploring a new environment. What kind of leader would you like to be?
For me, the word leadership means being grounded; having the courage to live my vision; and being authentic, truthful, open, flexible and vulnerable with those I lead. It is about making decisions based not just on facts but also on my intuitive knowledge and awareness.
If you are not in touch with what is really alive in you or unaware of what holds you back (your fears, limitations and default patterns), how can you step into your genuine leadership role? How can you lead, inspire or be an example to others? How can you build a true fellowship that arises out of trust, honesty and mutual respect?
Being a true leader is about being seen as you are with all your humanness and at the same time being in touch with the integrity, resilience, authority and strength of purpose that is required in your role. It is about having the ability to listen to others whilst being able to make firm decisions that may go against the grain. A true leader motivates and inspires others not just by their words but by their example.
As Goethe said: “Before you can do something, you must be something.” Who will you BE as a leader?
